Uganda Traditional Clothing

Gomesi is one of the typical traditional costumes of Ugandan women. Gomesi is luxuriously designed and is often worn for large occasions such as weddings, or Kwanjula. Depending on the material, Gomesi clothes can be used for sunbathing or everyday wear. In addition, if you notice, Gomesi also has a scarf wrapped around his waist, it is called an obi, or another name is kitambala. Obi is the main accessory that is worn with wedding outfits, or when going out in the sun.

In addition to Gomesi, there is another typical costume called Chitenji, also called as Chitenge in Uganda. This is a tailor-made dress, which is popularly worn every day and also in all events.

When Do They Wear traditional clothes

Traditionally in Uganda, the Gomesi dress symbolizes the national culture and can be passed on to the next daughter as a dowry. However, with the development of society, Ugandan women today have a need to buy trendy clothes themselves rather than traditional clothes given by their family.

Mushanana is another traditional dress that is also preferred by Ugandan women because it has a more modern and youthful style than Gomesi. Mushanana is also widespread in Uganda, Burundi, and Rwanda.

Ugandan Men's Traditional Dress

For Ugandan men, they have Kanzu, which is a dress that was introduced in the 19th century when it was brought in by merchants from Arabia. Kanzu was originally worn mainly by the upper classes in Uganda, later becoming more widely available to ordinary people. Kanzu has a simple white and ankle-length design.

Similar to Gomesi's case, Ugandan men today also have a tendency and preference for a variety of colors instead of just the traditional white dress. Today's traditional costumes are more diversely customized but still retain the traditional features depending on each generation and user.
